Johannes Schenck did what every genius does: ignored boundaries and achieved what no one had ever thought possible. Our seventeenth-century compatriot fused Italian bravura, German profundity and French finesse into a musical language that belonged to him and him alone. Viola da gamba player François Joubert-Caillet and harpsichordist Philippe Grisvard explore the richest vein in Schenck’s oeuvre, performing sonatas from Tyd en Konst-Oeffeningen, Scherzi Musicali and L’Écho du Danube — titles that reveal how the musical horizons of this master of the strings extended far beyond Amsterdam.
